Dendritic Opal Cabochon Hardness (Mohs): 5.5 - 6.5 Color: Colors
vary from transparent to white, yellow, tan or green with black or brown
inclusions. Transparency: Translucent to Opaque Notable Occurrences: Australia,
Mexico, Turkey and United States Dendritic Opal seems to be a generic term for
opal from locations throughout the world which has dendritic inclusions,
generally black fern-like or moss-like inclusions in a base of common opal
(opal without play of color). The base opal can be anywhere from transparent to
white, yellow, tan or green; and peruvian pink and blue opal is also sometimes
referred to as "Dendritic Opal" when these inclusions are present. |
As with
all opal, the common opal base is composed of spheres of silica surrounded by
water and is therefore sensitive to extremes of heat and cold. It is helpful to
keep stored in a cool (but not freezing) place, wrapped in a soft cloth. Do Not
Tumble Polish
Dentric Opal is also known as Melinite. It is a form
of chalcedony, with tree-like natural inclusions in the opal stone. Its
tree-like pattern has led to the belief that this opal promotes spiritual and
physical growth. |

Prehnite
Named for
the explorer Colonel Prehn, the first mineral to be named for a person.
White, light green and green to green-yellow. Luster glassy; hardness
6-6Ð; specific gravity 2.8-2.9; fracture uneven; cleavage poor basal
(commonly concave, following a curved crystal-growth habit). Brittle;
translucent to almost transparent.
Crusts resemble hemimorphite and some smithsonite (though usually
rougher surfaced and lower in luster and lighter in gravity than either). Fuses
more readily than hemimorphite and does not dissolve in hydrochloric acid with
bubbles like smithsonite. Its zeolite associates are often characteristic.

Chrysoprase is the most valuable stone in the chalcedony group. The
microscopic fine quartz fibers in it have a radial structure. Its green color
is the result of staining by nickel oxide compounds of the stone.
The
name chrysoprase has been derived from a Greek word "chrysos prason," which
mean gold leek. It is said to be a "Victory Stone." In the 18th century, as
said, thieves used to become invisible by keeping the stone in their mouth.
Chrysoprase gemstone is of very fine translucent green color and
texture. It is sometimes mistaken for green Imperial jadeite. With many
similarities with jadeite, chrysoprase is sometimes marketed as "Australian
Imperial Jade." |
The
hardness of the stone is 6 1/2 to 7 and is known for its specific metaphysical
characteristics. It sooths headache and loneliness, promotes emotional balance
and grants inner strength and peace. It also lead a person to greater
confidence and give relief to gout, eye problems and mental
illness.
 |
Like
all forms of chalcedony, chrysoprase is durable enough for all kinds of jewelry
applications, including rings. Chrysoprase is not known to be treated in any
way, though dyed green agate is sometimes used as a simulant.

Ruby-Zoisite was first discovered in 1954 in Tanzania. The name
anyolite derives from the word for "green" in the native language of the
Massai. Ruby-Zoisite has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, and is thus
of moderate hardness. Do Not Tumble Very High Domed Ruby in
