Sunstone is an ancient gem, in fact sunstones have been discovered in
Viking burial mounds. It was thought that the sunstone aided in navigation.
Formed and crystalized in a lava flow, Sunstone is a member of the feldspar
group of minerals and is closely related to Moonstone. These produce two types
of material, one that is cut en-cabochon or made into beads like opal or jade
and the other is faceted like a diamond or sapphire. The cabochon and bead
material exhibits a unique visual phenomenon known as "schiller" which is
caused by millions of microscopic copper platelets. These copper platelets
reflect light with varying intensities depending on their concentrations. The
"schiller" phenomenon makes the stone appear to glow even when viewed from a
distance. It has been suggested that Sunstone would be an excellent alternative
to Peridot as the August birthstone. When set alone or in combination with
other gems, Sunstones make a fabulous addition to any collection. Until
recently Sunstone was available only in limited quantities and poor grade. In
the early 1990's location of three different deposits in Oregon have made it
possible for top-grade rough and cut stones to be readily available at
competitive prices. The faceting material comes in a wide range of colors and
properties, some of them being unique to Sunstone.
Hardness 5.0 - 8.0.
Occurrence United States (Oregon), India, Canada, South Norway and Russia.
Appearance Metallic in appearance due to reflective inclusions of red, orange
or green crystals. Enhancements Sunstone is not enhanced.

Charoite may contain patches of black (Aegerine), yellowish orange
(Tinaksite) and also translucent crystals (Microcline Feldspar). Hardness of
this stone is 5.
Color: The colors in each piece of Charoite range from
bright lavender, violet and lilac to dark purple with both white, gray and
black veining. It forms a swirling pattern of interlocking crystals. Royal
lavendar flows with chatoyant streaks of white around bits of black, peach and
opalescent gray. The name's origin:
Charoite is named after the nearby Charo River.
Charoite is found in
only one location - along the Chary River at Aldan in Russia. This part of
Russia is known for its forbidding climate and terrain and as a traditional
place of exile for political prisoners. Why charoite has not been found in
other locations is not fully understood.
Chatoyant meaning: 1. having changeable lustre;

It was
not until 1974 when at the foot of the Bahoruco Range, the coastal province of
Barahona, Dominican Republic, a flash of blue in the beach sand caught the
attention of Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling and
they scooped down to rediscover larimar. Natives, who believed the stone came
from the sea, called the gem Blue Stone. Miguel promptly took his young
daughter's name Larissa and the Spanish word for the sea (mar) and formed
Larimar, by the colors of the water of the Caribbean Sea, where it was found.
As it turns out, the few stones they found were alluvial sediment, washed into
the sea by the Bahoruco River. |

Larimar
is a variety of pectolite, or a rock composed largely of pectolite, an acid
silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. Although pectolite is found in many
locations, none have the unique volcanic blue coloration of larimar. This blue
color, distinct from that of other pectolites, is the result of cobalt
substitution for calcium. |

Larimar is rated as a 4.5 to 5 on the mohs hardness scale,
making it a soft gemstone and therefore will not wear well in rings. However,
if it is set in a pair of earrings or in a necklace, its wearability will be
very good. Larimar should avoid coming in contact with detergents, bleach,
chlorine, hairspray, and perfume which can cause damage to the
gemstone. To prevent larimar from being scratched, one should store the
gemstone in a separate compartment from other jewelry. To avoid color fading,
larimar should not be exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. When
cleaning larimar, one should use mild soapy water and a soft brush.
